Wind and Tide: What Decides Whether a Session Is Good or Bad
A quality swell, arriving over an ideal sandbank, can still produce a disappointing session. What's missing then is the last ingredient — the one that plays out hour by hour rather than day by day: wind and tide.
This piece closes out the series on how waves form. The first article explained how swell is born out at sea, the second how the seabed turns it into a wave. This one covers what decides, at the very last moment, whether all that work adds up to a good session or a letdown.
Wind shapes the face of the wave
Wind acts directly on the water's surface, independently of the swell coming from below.
Offshore wind, blowing from land toward the sea, pushes up against the face of the wave just as it rises. It holds the wave back, smooths it out, slightly delays the break, and lets the lip peel off cleanly. This is the wind that produces the glassy conditions surfers look for: clean faces, no chop, sometimes even a plume of spray blown off the top of the wave.
Onshore wind, blowing from the sea toward land, pushes in the same direction as the swell. It chops up the surface, adds bump to the face, and makes waves close out earlier and more weakly. A good swell under strong onshore wind often means a disorganized sea, hard to read and unpleasant to surf.
Cross-shore wind, running parallel to the coast, has a variable effect depending on the spot's exact orientation relative to the swell and on the wind's strength.
On the Landes coast, the dominant offshore wind blows from the east, typically late at night and early in the morning, before the thermal sea breeze sets in during the day — especially in summer. This is why the best sessions are often had early, before the wind turns.
Tide changes the shape of the bottom without touching it
The second article in this series explained how the seabed determines where and how a wave breaks. Tide doesn't change that bottom, but it does change the depth of water above it — which amounts to the same thing for the swell.
A sandbank that produces a hollow barrel at mid-tide can behave very differently at another water level:
- At low tide, the water over the bank can become so shallow that the wave breaks too early, too violently, or the bottom is left completely dry in places.
- At high tide, the extra depth can drown the bank entirely: the swell no longer feels it enough to break properly, and the wave passes through without forming, or closes out all at once across its full width.
- In between, at a tide level specific to each spot, is often the window where the bank works best.
That window isn't the same from one spot to another, or from one day to the next, since sandbanks shift, as explained in the previous article. This is why regulars at a spot track tide coefficients almost as closely as the swell itself.
An example from the other side of the globe: Guanacaste's seasonal wind
On the Landes coast, offshore wind is a matter of hours within a single day. On some coasts, it becomes a matter of entire months.
That's the case on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, in the Guanacaste region. During the dry season, from December to April, a wind known locally as Papagayo blows almost continuously from inland out toward the ocean. It keeps spots like Nosara, Tamarindo, and Santa Teresa offshore day after day, and keeps the sky clear of rain throughout that whole period.
The comparison is useful: in the Landes, finding the right wind means picking the right hour within a single day. In Guanacaste during dry season, the wind question plays out almost at the scale of an entire season rather than a single morning. Two climates, two timescales, but the same underlying physics: wind blowing from land toward the sea keeps waves clean.
Checking before you go: good habits
A few simple habits avoid most disappointments.
Check the forecast wind direction and strength, not just for right now but across the entire window of the planned session: a morning offshore wind that turns onshore by mid-morning closes a good window fast.
Check the day's tide coefficient and schedule, and if possible, find out which tide usually works best at the spot in question — information that locals are often happy to share.
Remember that swell sets the potential, wind and tide decide whether that potential gets realized. A small swell with perfect offshore wind and an ideal tide can surprise you. A big swell poorly matched almost always disappoints.
