Filming in Log: Why That Flat, Dull Image Is Worth It
Watching Log-profile footage for the first time is almost always disappointing. The image looks gray, flat, with no contrast or color. The instinct is to assume something's wrong with the settings. But that's exactly what this footage is supposed to look like β and it's a choice that makes sense as soon as you understand what it enables later on.
What a Log profile actually does
A camera captures a far wider range of light than a screen can display, or than the human eye consciously perceives. Between the darkest part of an image and its brightest, there's an enormous range of values, called dynamic range.
A standard picture profile has to compress that dynamic range into a narrower display space, and it does so by sacrificing the extremes first: the brightest highlights often end up completely blown out white, with no recoverable detail, and the darkest shadows end up completely black. This is a compression decision the camera makes at the moment of capture, and it's irreversible.
A Log profile (short for logarithmic, describing the mathematical curve used) distributes that same dynamic range differently. It preserves more information in the highlights and shadows, at the cost of an image that looks flat and low-contrast on screen, because the mid-tone values are compressed together. Nothing is lost β it's just organized differently, waiting to be unpacked in the edit.
Why this changes everything for filming on water
Few subjects combine as many lighting challenges as a surf scene shot in broad daylight: a sky and a water surface reflecting very intense light, a dark board and wetsuit, sometimes a shadow cast beneath the wave itself. This is exactly the kind of scene where a standard picture profile fails most often: either the water is properly exposed and the subject becomes a dark, detail-less silhouette, or the subject is properly exposed and the reflections on the water blow out to pure white.
A Log profile preserves detail simultaneously in the brightest reflections and the darkest areas of the same image. That detail, invisible to the eye on the monitor while shooting, becomes usable again in the edit: it becomes possible to recover texture in a patch of water that looked blown out, or to bring back detail in a shadow that looked pure black.
The real cost: it all comes down to exposure
A Log profile isn't free. It demands a particular discipline while shooting that a standard profile forgives far more easily.
Because the information is compressed into the mid-tones, an underexposed Log image β even slightly β loses a disproportionate amount of shadow detail, far more than a standard profile underexposed by the same amount. The recommended practice is to expose to the right: accept an image that looks a bit too bright on the monitor while shooting, because that slight apparent overexposure is what guarantees the maximum recoverable detail afterward, across every part of the image.
This discipline also means monitoring exposure differently: a standard monitor doesn't faithfully show the captured dynamic range, and Log's flat look can easily be misleading β an image that looks properly exposed in Log can actually be underexposed. A histogram or a false-color exposure tool becomes a far more reliable guide than the eye alone.
Finally, a Log profile always requires color correction work after shooting. Log footage is never meant to be published as shot: it's waiting to be "redeveloped," a bit like a film negative waiting for its print.
An added benefit: making a whole day look consistent
A surf session filmed over several hours often crosses very different lighting conditions: clear skies then overcast, morning then midday, changing orientation relative to the sun depending on the peak being filmed.
A Log profile, by keeping a wide, consistent dynamic range from shot to shot, makes it far easier to match all those sequences together in the edit. It becomes much simpler to make a shot filmed early in the morning match visually with one filmed two hours later β something that would be much harder to fix starting from footage already compressed and clipped by a standard profile.
Log isn't always the right call
This discipline costs time: every Log shot requires a post-production pass, which isn't always justified for content meant to go out quickly, with no particular aesthetic ambition, where a standard profile delivered straight out of camera is more than enough.
The choice depends on the final use: a personal memento shared as-is doesn't need this extra step. Footage meant to be kept, shared widely, or simply showcased almost always benefits from going through it.
