Drone Piloting: The Basics for Filming a Scene Well
Knowing how to take off and land a drone safely is one thing. Producing footage that people actually want to watch is another. Between the two lies a whole set of habits that separate amateur footage from a shot that looks intentional.
Here are the fundamentals that come up most often, regardless of the drone model used.
The sun decides everything, before you even take off
Light is the first thing to get right, and it gets set before takeoff, not in editing.
Filming with the sun behind you leaves the subject well lit, with saturated colors and a sky that keeps its detail. It's the safest choice for a readable image.
Filming into the sun (backlit) produces dark silhouettes and a halo of light around the subject. The effect can be striking, especially late in the day, but it has to be a deliberate choice: an uncontrolled backlit shot gives a flat image and an illegible subject, drowned out by an overexposed sky.
The best light is usually found early and late in the day, when the sun is low: shadows stretch out, light becomes softer and more directional, and colors gain depth. In the middle of the day, under a high sun, shadows shrink to almost nothing and the image flattens out β a problem every pilot runs into, wherever they're shooting.
Anticipating movement instead of following it
A beginner's natural instinct is to follow the subject with the camera, the way you'd follow someone with your eyes. The result: the drone always reacts a beat too late, and the footage feels like it's chasing rather than composing.
The better approach is to anticipate the trajectory rather than follow it: know where the subject will be in two or three seconds, and get the drone there before the subject arrives. For a surf session, that means knowing where the wave is going to break before the surfer takes off on it, and positioning the drone accordingly instead of reacting once the wave has already been taken.

Slow movements beat precise ones
Smooth camera movement almost always comes from slow, gradual stick inputs, never from fast, precise ones.
A sharp stick input produces a visible jolt in the footage, even a slight one. A gradual input, where acceleration and deceleration are spread over a second or two, produces movement that feels intentional rather than accidental. This rule applies to every axis: ascending, descending, rotating, translating.
A simple exercise for getting better at this: film a fixed point on the ground while making a slow, wide movement around it, aiming for the smoothest possible path rather than the most precise one. Smoothness of movement shows up on screen far more than pinpoint accuracy.
Managing the battery as a creative constraint, not just a safety one
A drone's limited flight time isn't just a matter of flight safety β it directly shapes how you film.
A useful habit is to mentally plan out a shot before taking off: the opening frame, the movement, the closing frame, factoring in remaining flight time. Waiting until 20% battery to improvise a last shot rarely produces the best result of the session β the anxiety of getting back shows up in how smooth the movement is.
One simple rule that holds everywhere: always start heading back to the takeoff point at a battery threshold decided in advance, rather than deciding in the moment. The best shot of the day is never worth the risk of losing the aircraft.
